Who are we?
DSM Energy Control Ltd is a partnership between Dr Peter Duffett-Smith, Radio Astronomer and entrepreneur from the University of Cambridge, and Terry Mann, Managing Director of TM Electrical, an electrical contractor in Cambridge.
Dr Peter Duffett-Smith
I am a physicist by training, and a radio astronomer by trade. I managed to mix academic research at the University of Cambridge alongside the commercial opportunities that arose as a result. Previously I set up Cambridge Positioning Systems Ltd in order to exploit location technology that came as a result of my research work. Currently, I am Chairman of Focal Point Positioning Ltd., but now my time is also invested in DSM Energy Control Ltd., and in particular the solarcache system.
Very simply, having had solar panels installed I was disappointed that I could not use more of the electricity generated by them. Exporting the excess to the National Grid was not attractive from the point of view of cost, virtually giving away my generated energy. solarcache was the answer. I installed the prototype in 2011 and have been enjoying free hot water ever since.
More recently, I have added two more products: dsmzoneheat for controlling electric heaters, and dsmpoolpro for comprehensive control of a domestic swimming pool.
I have been an electrical contractor, based in Cambridge, since 1985.
solarcache tackles a problem that customers regularly comment on – namely how to make their solar-made electricity go further. You make lots of energy on a sunny day – perhaps when you are at work – and by evening when the sun's descended you've exported it all back to the Grid. And you are having to buy your evening electricity from your Energy supplier at a higher price.
solarcache solves this wastage by taking the electricity and using it cleverly. It's a neat solution.
